Ella Bella Just Can’t Tell Ya!

As soon as I saw this book on Hallie Sherman’s instagram (@speechtimefun) I just had to buy it. Hallie Sherman is a Speech-Language Pathologist and has a popular website/blog called Speech Time Fun. Her book is a must for using in your speech therapy room, at home with your children and in classrooms. It promotes inclusivity and diversity as it delves into the experience of a young girl who has challenges with speech and language; both of which are often not themes in children’s books. In a therapy room it is a great way to teach both vocabulary and word retrieval strategies. Moreover, it implements rhyming throughout the story, which as I mention in a previous post are incredibly useful for children’s early reading and language development. For instance, “reading specialists tell us that a child’s ability to discriminate and create rhyming words, as well as their internal sense of rhythm, are closely related to early reading ability (Monro, 2002).” It is also a great resource for personal purposes; one of my family members is a toddler who has Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) and I know this would be a great book for her to read at home as well.

Happy reading!
